What is On Your Marks?

On Your Marks started over 15 years ago because an Asda driver named Mark Higginbottom was sadly diagnosed with Lymphatic cancer and had only a short time to live.

The owner of the Bruntingthorpe Proving Ground, Mr. David Walton kindly gave us permission to hold a fund raising day and we agreed to put some Asda trucks on the track for colleagues to pay to drive them with a driving instructor beside them.

A couple of car clubs, Lotus and GTR 0C kindly agreed to help us and they took paying passengers around the track.

Unfortunately Mark passed away before the day but £7,500 was raised for Marks wife and children. The day was deemed a success and we were asked if we could continue with the day the following year.  We approached Mark’s family and asked if we could do the day in his memory and use his name.

With the help of Marks family it was agreed that all the money raised from that day on would go to children’s cancer related charities.

We have raised in excess of £483,000 and are looking to raise much more for the charities involved this year.  Add to this the money the charities have received in donations on the day, we must be in excess of £500,000!

From a few hundred people attending on that 1st year, and previously only open to Asda staff and families. We are now opening the event to the general public and we expect to attract between 20,000 and 30,000 people over the weekend’s event to come along and enjoy this spectacular day.

The nominated charities are invited along with some of the children we make the money for and we try to give them a day to remember by opening a special ‘wish gate’ after the lunch break and we give the children and their siblings the ride of their lives by letting them pick the cars they would like to be driven around in.

This is a very special time for the On Your Marks committee and when we see the faces of the children enjoying themselves it spurs us on to keep this event going.
